The beautiful 13th century cathedral in Narbonne is certainly worth a visit and there are a multitude of churches and historic sites including Roman remains in Nîmes, the famous Pont du Gard, and stunning gorges, grottoes and canyons.
The magnificent vineyards of the Minervois and Corbières, where the patrons of a hundred different caves eagerly await your appreciation of their wines, are amongst some of the better known vineyards. The markets in every town are a feast for the senses and a highlight for many people who live in this area. Stunning displays of fruit & veg, olive stalls, mountains of cheeses and meats are amongst the fantastic aspects of a gastronomic adventure in this part of France.
Practical info : The village of Mèze is set on the north coast of the Etang de Thau and has its own beautiful beach. Mèze means milieu, translated as middle, presumably named this way since it lies in the middle of the north coast of the Bassin. There are numerous attractions during summer, plus weekly markets. It also has many fine restaurants around the picturesque quays filled with fishing boats. The nearby Marseillan, 14kms to the south-west, also boasts fine restaurants, as well as guided tours and tasting at Noilly Prat alcohol which is produced there. In 20 minutes you can be bathing on the Mediterranean on one of the many sandy beaches stretching from the Cap d'Agde to Sète. For those that want cosmopolitan excitement - Montpellier boasts fine art galleries, concerts, theatres, restaurants, with a youthful vigour helped by a large university and some spectacular modern architecture.
The area is rich in things to see and do: Pézenas, with antique shops and its market; Béziers with bullfighting in August and St Guilhem-le-Desert in the hills with medieval style streets, artists selling their works and an abbey church (where part of its cloister was exported to New York).
In terms of access, international airports are within easy driving distance - Montpellier (25 mins), Carcassonne (90 mins), Perpignan (90 mins), Nimes (45 mins), Toulouse (2 and half hours) and Barcelona (3.5 hours). There are railway stations at Béziers (30 mins), Narbonne (40 mins), Agde (15 mins), Montpellier (25 mins) with TGV connections to Paris.
