Location :
Languedoc, an empty, secret land of lush valleys and low, wooded hills. This is a beautiful land, very different from its more glamorous neighbour to the east, Provence, this, despite the menus of the two regions very occasionally looking remarkably similar. To sample the difference, try cassoulet, a casserole of park and haricot beans spiced with garlic and herbs. Or what about cousinat? This is a stew of chestnuts, cream and fruit, a local specialty.
Roman influence is seen in towns like Nîmes and in the three-tiered Pont du Gard, a masterpiece in stone which carried the Uzès to Nîmes aqueduct over the river Gardon and has survived the centuries almost unscathed. Inland from the Mediterranean, the great plain is a vast sea of vineyards backed by the less-productive mountains of the Cévennes.
Practical info : Montagnac is situated in the heart of Languedoc's hillside vineyards and near the river Hérault. It is 10kms from the Mediterranean beaches, and only 5kms from the lovely 12th century town of Pézenas nicknamed 'Languedoc's Little Versailles'. In Pézenas you will find many little arts and crafts shops built for the medieval fairs and many restaurants. In the historic centre beautiful old squares can be enjoyed as well as live music, wine and village festivals, a flea market and art exhibitions. Also open-air dramatised theatre are popular, a tradition linked to Molière who lived here for quite a few years entertaining the princes and governors of the Languedoc.
For antique fans, you will love the many dozens of antique dealers in their Ali Baba caves. Montagnac is known for its 12th century St. André church and square lined with old platane trees and terraces where you can enjoy a nice glass of wine. It lies halfway between Montpellier and Béziers and 300kms from Barcelona. 10kms outside of Montagnac is the town of Bouzigues, known throughout France for its shell fish.
Ryanair fly to Perpignan, Nîmes and Carcassonne and also to Montpellier, all within 90 minutes drive of the residence. Easyjet runs flights from Gatwick to Toulouse 2 hours drive away. For train fans, you can link up to the TGV network via Béziers or Montpellier, both about 20 minutes away.
