Location :
Neatly framed between the Atlantic and the Massif Central, with the Gironde Delta to the north and the Spanish border to the south, lies the regions of Aquitaine and Midi-Pyrénées. Within these frontiers is a pot-pourri of snow-capped mountains, lush river valleys, arid plateaux and gorges and huge dune lands and pine forests. This southern land has attracted men since the Stone Age. Romans and the Vikings found it to their liking and in the Middle Ages the French and the English fought over it and left fortifications as a souvenir of the struggles. Warm stoned towns and villages provide the backcloth for what seems now to be an immutably tranquil and fascinating way of life.
Practical info : Dax, situated on the banks of the River Adour, to the south of the great pine forests of Les Landes, is a renowned health resort. Its curative hot water spring (fontaine chaude) has been used since the Roman era. The town was formerly a Gallo-Roman settlement and parts of the ancient fortifications may be seen in the Théodore-Denis park by the river.
Dax is very much a full-service town. However, for more fashionable shopping take the trip 25 minutes south to Biarritz. You will have some great and wide open beaches which are deserted for much of the time. In addition, the Atlantic surf comes pounding in on the coast in this part of the world attracting surfers from all corners of Europe. You are also well-placed for winter sports, with the nearest ski resorts being about 90 minutes away in the Pyrénées. Also, the Pyrénées are absolutely fantastic for walking with stunning valley and mountain views. And don't forget that Spain is a mere forty five minute drive from Dax, so you will be eating tapas and pintxos in no time in towns such as San Sebastian or Pamplona, the latter much noted for its running of the bulls in July.
In terms of access, Dax does have its own station where the TGV does stop which can take you up to Paris in a little over 4 hours. A train south towards Spain takes around 45 minutes and it takes a little over 1 hour to get to Bordeaux by train to the north. For a quicker method of travel, Ryanair operate flights into Biarritz (25 minutes away) and Pau from London Stansted, the latter just one hour away from the residence. You may also wish to consider flying into Bordeaux from Southampton with Flybe.
Description :
This is a wonderful traditional two-level landais villa which includes good quality character and warming finishings throughout and is situated between Dax and Bayonne 20 minutes from the ocean. The living area has a lot of charm in part due to the open-fireplace and the domineering exposed beams and has access to the terrace. The mezzanine level can be used as an extra sleeping area or alternatively as a study. The large enclosed and tree dominated land includes a swimming pool which will save you the need to make a trip to the beaches to cool off. There is a very large garage which is very useful for your storage needs. Two of the four bedrooms can be found on the first floor and one of these has its own ensuite shower room. There is also a possibility of adding to the accommodation by renovating the attic. Incidentally, it has a good amount of character as there are exposed beams and exposed stone. The independent gite consists of two bedrooms, a bathroom, a WC, a living area and a kitchen. It has a 1 year rental contract running on it at the moment and is rented at €580 per month. It would be perfect for holiday rentals also. Very comfortable!
